Dragons of Tarkir Type 4 Review

Dragons of Tarkir has been completely revealed, so it’s time for a Type 4 set review!  I’ll be talking about every card I’m interested in or thinking about for Type 4, including mentions of cards for budget stacks and Infinite stacks, which allow for cards that deal unlimited damage/instant kills on their own.  Let’s get started!

Center Soul: I can think of worse cards I’ve played.  It has rebound, which lets you get protection along with unblockability the next turn.  Not a high priority, but could be fun.

Fate Forgotten: Getting rid of artifacts and enchantments is always good, and this takes care of them basically for good.  Pretty solid card, cut a random naturalize variant for it if you need to.

Hidden Dragonslayer:  Morph is awesome because it doesn’t count as your spell for the turn, and this guy has a ridiculous flip ability.  He’ll kill anything threatening, and still leave behind a body that can… do pretty much nothing tbh, but still.  Good card.

Myth Realized: A possible Infinite/infinite that doesn’t have haste but doesn’t die to sweepers.  Probably a fun card for infinity stacks.

Profound Journey: Pretty big advantage here if both halves resolve.  Definitely a late game play, but brutal if you get both hits.

Radiant Purge: More exile, and multicolor stuff abounds in Type 4.  If it only hit dudes it would be an easy pick, the added enchantment clause is just bonus.

Resupply: It’s instant and has draw a card on it.  6 life is basically a fog a lot of the time.  I’ll try it.

Scour the Wastes: EoT prepare to kill the table for infinite stacks.  Definitely fine there.

Anticipate: Low impact, but card selection is never terrible, especially as an instant.

Blessed Reincarnation:  Sometimes, you just need to kill an Ulamog.  And then kill whatever you flipped.  I don’t like this card very much, but it’s probably playable.

Clone Legion: My inner timmy rejoices.  Probably not a great card, but definitely a fun one.

Contradict: It’s a counterspell that draws cards at common, add one as soon as you can.

Dragonlord’s Prerogative: Draw 4 at instant speed with the possibility of uncounterable.  Fine card.

Glint: Holy crap this card is pretty.  That’s it, it sucks in Type 4, but damn.

Illusory Gains: This looks terrible, but at least it prevents your opponent from playing creatures with good activated abilities.

Learn from the Past: In drafts, decking is often a viable wincon.  See above for my thoughts on low impact, low cost cards that draw cards.

Living Lore: Da hell is that art lol.  Note that it only has to deal combat damage (not to player), and it’s possible to have a 7/7 or bigger.  Definitely a Type 4 card.

Mirror Mockery: Looks super funny.  Play with it if you don’t hate fun.

Monastery Loremaster:  See above notes on morph.  You also get a good spell out of the deal.  Good card.

Negate: Reprint, playable card, weird art.

Silumgar Sorcerer: At least it’s a recurable essence scatter.  Dodges Narset ult.  Playable card.

Stratus Dancer: Yet another god tier morph.  Really, if you have one play it, not much to say.

Damnable Pact:  Kills someone in multiple ways for Infinity stacks.

Death Wind: Reprint, kills indestructible dudes.  Not much to say here.

Deathbringer Regent: On a big table this is real easy to get off, and a 5/6 flyer is pretty sick.

Foul Renewal: Nice design, and not a terrible card.  Get back a card you already liked, and possibly kill something.

Gravepurge:  I play it already, it’s never exciting but it’s better than nothing.

Hedonist’s Trove: Whoa.  This is a Type 4 spell if I’ve ever seen one.  Grave hate, more spells, and a massive effect.  Great stuff.

Risen Executioner: If you play with him being a “free” spell if you cast from the yard he can fuel infinite sacrifice outlets.  If not, he’s terrible.

Sidisi, Undead Vizier:  I don’t play with tutors.  If you do, here’s another one.

Silumgar Assassin:  Kills utility dudes, and that’s about it.  Pretty meh, but all the morph’s can’t me god tier.

Berserkers’ Onslaught:  lol.  A funny card, probably not very good, but makes me laugh.

Commune with Lava:  Lets you cast your deck for infinite stacks.  Good fun there.

Descent of the Dragons:  Who cares how you play this card, it’s awesome.  But seriously, you can draft a deck around this or use it to nerf their fatties into more manageable size.  Not a great wrath, but it does its job.

Dragon Whisperer:  An infinite/2 that makes infinite 4/4s is great stuff for the infinite stack.

Ire Shaman:  A little random, but free spells are free spells.  Good card.

Dragon’s Triumph:  It finds dragons.  Dragons are fun.  If you don’t hate shuffling, go for it.

Volcanic Vision: Get a good card back and maybe wrath their field.  Sorcery speed though.  Try it, but don’t be surprised if it’s terrible.

Assault Formation: Your creatures block like gods and attack like gods.  Infinity stack.

Den Protector:  Free recursion and a chump blocker.  Nice stuff.

Foe-Razer Regent: Fight club has opened.  We’re not talking about this (but it’s pretty fun, if a little mediocre)

Naturalize:  Playable reprint, if you don’t have a lot of artifact/enchantment hate.

Segmented Krotiq:  Just a vanilla fatty that doesn’t count as a spell.  Nice for budget stacks.

Arashin Sovereign: A 6/6 that you can choose to always draw or never get reanimated.  Not terrible.

Atarka’s Command:  None of these would be playable on their own, but choosing 2 might give this a boost.  I’m not a buyer though.

Boltwing Marauder: Pretty funny card, and can get in a massive damage burst with a token producer.

Dragonlord Atarka:  Burn everything!  8/8 flample!  Dragon!  This is what Type 4 is based on.  Love it.

Dragonlord Dromoka:  This chick is getting killed every single time, because letting you get in spells counter free is not something that can be allowed.  If she survives, it’s hard for you to lose.

Dragonlord Kolaghan: Haste haste haste.  Her trigger is pretty much useless in the normally singleton nature of Type 4, but a 6/5 haste lord is pretty good.

Dragonlord Ojutai: Hard to kill originally, and if he hits you get some good selection.  Plus a body that’s not depressing.

Dragonlord Silumgar:  The most powerful for constructed is the weakest in Type 4, as he’ll die real easy.  But stealing stuff is always good.  Might be expensive though, so don’t think you need one.

Dromoka’s Command: Much better abilities here, with damage prevention being relevant very often, enchantment hate always being nice, and fighting killing their utility dudes.

Harbinger of the Hunt:  Kills everything else.  Always welcome.

Kolaghan’s Command: Recursion, some discard at instant speed, and artifact hate.  And the possibility of a kill.

Ojutai’s Command: At worse this is exclude.  At best you get Azorius Guildmage.  Play it.

Sarkhan Unbroken:  Draws cards, makes dragons, and tutors if that’s your thing.  Fun card.

Silumgar’s Command: See ojutai’s command.  Great card, counterspell and a bonus.

Swift Warkite: Can cheat cheap utility dudes into play with a reasonable body.  Interesting card.

And that wraps up Dragons of Tarkir in Type 4!  Looks like it’ll be a fun set for sure.
